Motivating ELLs

This school year sure is one for the books, but when we come together as a community to continue learning and improving our practice, we are better able to support and serve our multilingual students.

Get excited to dive in and learn some great strategies to motivate ELLs! We will also be challenging ourselves to think about the best ways to make the strategies in the book work in the different instructional contexts we are encountering due to the pandemic and social distancing requirements.

This interactive notebook will contain everything you need to participate. Weekly questions will be posted each Saturday and the chat will last 3 weeks, with each week having a particular focus.

For this chat we will be using the hashtags:

Efrén Divided

School's Out for Summer!

I know many teachers have been out for awhile, but today is officially my last day, so it is perfect timing for a new round of #EllChat_Bkclub!! We are excited to do another novel this round and Efrén Divided is the perfect one!

Thanks to our cool interactive Bitmoji room, I *think* everything needed to participate is all linked from one central place. I will embed the room here and it will also stay pinned to my Twitter profile page throughout the chat.

Click around in the image or click through the slides for information and tools.

If you choose to respond to the weekly questions, please identify which one you’re responding to in your tweet (2A1, 2A2) Please note: The number before the Q indicates which week of the chat we are in, so 2A1 would indicate the answer to question 1 from week 2. Remember that you are not limited to these questions. Post a pic of your highlighted text, your favorite quotes, meaningful ideas, book snaps, your own questions, and connections to other texts!!
#EllChat_BkClub is a slow chat, so you can post at any time throughout the week and throughout the chat. You can also post about questions or topics from previous weeks. It's all good as long as you are learning!
For this chat, we are using the following hashtags:

#EllChat_BkClub 26.0
#EfrenDivided

If you are choosing to read one, we recommend you find a book buddy that is reading the other one to connect with throughout the chat!

With a Little Help from My Friends

Welcome to #EllChat_BkClub 23.0
featuring

With a Little Help from My Friends
Conversation-Based Instruction for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Classrooms

In our recent round with Breaking Down the Wall, we read about a nationwide study, which indicated that ELs spend a mere 2% of their classroom day engaged in academic talk. This is a startling number and we can all agree...

This. Is. Not. Okay.

We know that our ELs need continuous opportunities to engage in academic talk throughout their entire school day, about different subjects and topics, in different contexts, with different partners, and with scaffolds that support, but don't stifle the complexity of their language use.

So, we turn to With a Little Help from My Friends which details "research-based practices for making classroom learning more interactive and conversation-based."

Let's dive in and learn together!

The reading schedule is as follows:

I will post weekly questions on Twitter and also archive them here, so you can access all of the questions in one place.
