Distinguishing Language Acquisition from Learning Disabilities

Welcome to #EllChat_BkClub 19.0!

Summer break is such a great time to relax, regroup, refresh....and READ!

Our next book is Supporting English Learners in the Classroom: Best Practices for Distinguishing Language Acquisition from Learning Disabilities by Eric M. Haas and Julie Esparza Brown.

Round 19.0 is our second #EllChat_BkClub round for summer 2019 and I am particularly excited for our next book because one of the authors, Dr. Julie Esparza Brown, has been a mentor to me for years! Julie was one of my professors at Portland State University when I added my ESOL endorsement. She taught, and still teaches, the course on working with ELs who have special needs. Then, she was my advisor when I completed my master's project and she was on my doctoral committee when I wrote and defended my dissertation. Her research and knowledge about serving English learners who also have disabilities is pertinent to our field and an area where so many of us crave more knowledge!

Also, Julie recently received a promotion at Portland State to the highest rank as full professor. Currently only 1% of full professors in the U.S. are Latina. Julie is paving the way as a Latina leader in the field! She is also learning how to navigate Twitter because she is eager to participate in our chat and interact with our #PLN as we read her work.

We are going to take the next 4 weeks to dive into this text and learn about what considerations are necessary when working with ELs who are struggling in order to determine if their needs are due to language or due to disabilities.

Our reading schedule is as follows:

I will post weekly questions on twitter (typically on each Saturday) and I will also link the questions here so you can easily come back to this post and find links to questions from all of the weeks in one place.

Week 1 Questions
Week 2 Questions
Week 3 Questions
Week 4 Questions

If you choose to respond to the weekly questions, please identify which one you’re responding to in your tweet (2A1, 2A2) Please note: The number before the Q indicates which week of the chat we are in, so 2A1 would indicate the answer to question 1 from week 2. Remember that you are not limited to these questions. Post a pic of your highlighted text, your favorite quotes, meaningful ideas, book snaps, your own questions, and connections to other texts!!

#EllChat_BkClub is a slow chat, so you can post at any time throughout the week and throughout the chat. You can also post about questions or topics from previous weeks. It's all good as long as you are learning!
